I have always wanted to habla Espanol. Fact is, I took two years in Spanish in high school. I had a really good Spanish teacher. Really good. I was kind of a jerk to her in high school. Can I just get something off my chest? Okay, here’s my totally unrelated story about my Spanish teacher.
My Spanish teacher, Mrs. Ayers, was really good at teaching Spanish. The fact that I remember any Spanish at all is a testament to that fact. I don’t remember all the details about this part so some of this might be a little off. I did a program where I tutored kids at the local library. My Spanish teacher was part of this program somehow. She may have been a supervisor?
One of my good friends was getting paid as part of this program, which I believe was grant funded. I was a volunteer for part of the time before I finally got a position. I and a few other high school kids were tutors. We all tutored until basketball season then we all just quit. We just didn’t show up. So one day we were tutoring kids and the next day we weren’t. Yeah, major jerk thing to do. My Spanish teacher asked me what happened and gave me the advice that I should formally resign.
I remember working with her and she was really cool. She was a good teacher. She let us have fun in her class and had interesting projects to help us learn Spanish. I remember asking her how to say ridiculous things like “You have a really big head.” She told me. And I remember it still. Tu tiennes una cabeza grandisimo! In case you want to know ;).
I regret how I handled that. But, hey, I was like 15. Many of us do stupid stuff when we are 15. So anyway, I thought about all of this when I heard that I was able to review Pimsleur Spanish I. When I received the product, my first impression was that it was really well packaged. The set comes with several cds and I worried that they might come loose and get scratched up during shipping but it was packaged so well that did not happen.
After using the cds I have found that I have a renewed interest in Spanish. I love the way the cds make learning Spanish interesting and not at all boring. I think I’m going to take these with me to work and pop them in while I’m working in my classroom and pick up some Spanish while I’m working.
My motivation for learning Spanish is for teaching Spanish speaking students. I have ESOL on my certificate and I often get students who speak Spanish at home. I feel that it will be very helpful to be able to communicate with parents of my students as well as my students who speak Spanish.
